Sheffield Wildlife Trust Food Programmes

(for online booking visit the Food in Sheffield website)

Sheffield Wildlife Trust views food and health promotion as complementary to work conserving the environment and wildlife.  The one way that links us all to our environment is the food that we eat: where we buy it, what we buy, and how we prepare it.  A healthy diet incorporating seasonal produce, reducing the use of over-packaged convenience food and more meals ‘cooked from scratch’, is also healthy for our environment.

The Food in Sheffield (5 A DAY) Programme

Although funded by the Sheffield Primary Care trust, Food In Sheffield is delivered by Sheffield Wildlife Trust in partnership with Heeley City Farm.

We aim to promote healthy eating in Sheffield while working with local communities, community organisations and targeted schools.
We work alongside community workers and health professionals in the city to ensure effective delivery of training courses incorporating health messages set out by the Department of Health and the Food Standards Agency.

The Workshop Course – 4 week course
This is aimed at people who have basic cooking skills but need to develop skills in adapting recipes.  Here our experienced Community Food Workers give healthy eating information about labelling, types of fats and sugars, how to eat well and much more.  Plus each session includes a cookery demonstration to show healthy eating tips in practice.

The Cook and Eat Cookery club – 6 week course
This course is suitable for anyone who does not feel confident to cook home prepared meals or who needs help with healthy cooking techniques.
As well as basic food hygiene, a virtual shop, healthy eating advice and cooking on a budget and more there is also an opportunity to cook recipes at every session.

Are you a community workers or health professional who knows someone who is suitable for our course:

Sheffield Healthy Choices Award

Are you looking for family friendly cafes and restaurants with plenty of healthy options on the menu?  Sheffield Healthy Choices Award will be coming to a range of cafes and eating-places across Sheffield over the coming months.  The Healthy Choices Award is given to caterers who provide a range of healthy options, as well as using healthier catering practices throughout.  The Award also highlights cafes that are welcoming of breastfeeding mothers, that source food locally and stock fairly traded items.

Sheffield Wildlife Trust delvers the Healthy Choices Award as part of the Sheffield – Let’s Change for Life Programme.  For more information about the Award, Award holders and the programme please see www.sheffieldc4l.org.uk

Barnsley Eat Well at Work Award

Respect the Lunch Break…! The Barnsley Eat Well at Work Award accredits employers for providing access to healthy food in the workplace.  It encompasses guidance around provision of food by work canteens and procurement of local, seasonal food. Participating workplaces also commit to actively promoting the lunch break and promoting healthy eating messages within the workplace.

The project is funded by NHS Barnsley and is working with Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Barnsley Primary Care Trust and Barnsley Hospital initially, with roll out to the private sector expected Early 2010.

Barnsley Healthy Choices Convenience Store Award

Giving local people more convenient access to affordable, healthy and seasonal food – that’s the vision for this new healthy eating campaign in Barnsley.

The project, funded by NHS Barnsley, aims to make it easier for everyone across the borough to access good quality fruit and vegetables from their local shops by promoting the sale of more affordable and healthier foods.

After a successful launch over the summer the project is now engaged with 3 stores in Barnsley:  McColls in Stairfoot, McColls in Wath-Upon-Dearne and Premier in Barugh Green.

Andrew Fenwick, store manager of McColls in Stairfoot says, “I am proud to represent our company on the project and we hope to show our commitment to providing our customers with quality and affordable fruit and vegetables”

The project is linked up with the national ‘Change4Life Convenience Store project.  During the pilot of this project in the North East sales of fruit and vegetables rose by an average of 47% in participating stores.
