Crabtree Ponds

Sandwiched between the main Barnsley Road and the Northern General Hospital, Crabtree Ponds Nature Reserve provides a much loved and much needed green oasis for local people.

With rudd, roach, perch and carp all to be found, the ponds are popular with local anglers, while the locally rare alkaline waters support a number of important species including large southern and brown hawker dragonflies, common frogs and toads, and smooth and palmate newts.

Pipistrelle, Daubenton’s and Leisler’s bats all flit over from the nearby Roe Woods to feed at the ponds, and, with the newly installed bat boxes, may start roosting at the reserve too.  In the woods – where sycamore, poplar and ash predominate – bird boxes have definitely encouraged birds to nest, with tree creepers, woodpeckers, wrens and several tits amongst those nesting here.
