Fox Hagg

High on a hillside overlooking the Rivelin Valley perches one of our tiniest nature reserves, Fox Hagg.

Sit on a bench and you can see for miles - right over the Rivelin Dams and the woods of Wyming Brook further up the valley – but don’t forget to look under your feet too, at Fox Hagg’s own varied and dramatic scenery.

With moorland, scrub and woodland all packed within its boundaries, plants such as bilberry, bracken, heather and birch can all be found, along with a whole variety of birds including meadow and tree pipits, redstarts and linnets, and any number of warblers which flit between the scattered birch and the woodland edge.

Thought once to be valued as a holly ‘hagg’, when spikeless holly leaves were cut for winter fodder, Fox Hagg is now managed to maximise wildlife.  Where once grazing sheep maintained the heathland, now small areas of scrub are cut on a five year cycle, and bracken is also controlled to allow heather to grow.
