The Wildlife Trust working in Sheffield and Rotherham exists to build a better future for people and wildlife.
Who are we? We are the biggest voluntary sector nature conservation and environmental regeneration organisation in South Yorkshire, with over 4,000 members, 50 staff and an annual turnover of about £2,000,000.
What are our aims? Working with local people, we aim to protect and enhance the environment of Sheffield and Rotherham for the benefit of people and wildlife, to increase the public’s understanding of the natural world, and to provide opportunities for people to enjoy the outdoors.
How do we do it? We manage ten nature reserves, from large moorland areas of international importance to small city centre nature parks; provide a successful programme of environmental training, food and healthy living development, education and youth work; have a practical sites team for wildlife friendly conservation work and land management; run events; and under our trading arm, Wildscapes, undertake landscape design, commercial graphic design… and so much more!
Urban action: We have a strong track record of promoting sustainable development, urban regeneration and delivering social and economic benefits through environmental action. Much of our work takes place in disadvantaged inner city housing estates where SWT has led environmental aspects of the city’s community regeneration programmes for the last decade.
Working with water: We have an environmental input into waterway regeneration along Sheffield’s network of streams, rivers and canals and are working with the City Council to secure environmentally sensitive modes of effective and efficient open space management.
Training and education: We run a large programme of accredited vocational environmental skills training and deliver national curriculum-linked outdoor education programmes to children from over 100 schools.
Working in partnership, both nationally through the Wildlife Trusts network, and locally with the City Council and Sheffield’s regeneration agencies, enables us to make sure wildlife and the environment are given the consideration they deserve.
