We're looking for runners for this year's Half Marathon and 3km Fun Run.

In the Olympic year, the Wildlife Trust for Sheffield and Rotherham is amazed not to have recruited any runners for the Sheffield Half Marathon event. Event organisers are confident that the event will be fully subscribed. They have even extended the number of places available this year.

“Usually, we have at least one team and several individual runners who pound the streets on our behalf” said the Wildlife Trusts’ marathon co-ordinator, Jo Walker. “We’ve been surprised, especially in the year of the London Olympics when we thought more people would be inspired to get fit and join in local sporting events.”

“It’s a great race” said Richard Pethen, a previous runner, “It’s marvellous to run through the city where you live: you see it from a different perspective. But I am inspired by how green our city. I know how much the Wildlife Trust does locally and I was happy to run for such a good cause.”

This year’s Half Marathon is not until Sunday 27th May so there’s plenty of time to get up to speed.

And if 13 miles feels just that bit too far, the 3km fun run on the same day at the Don Valley Stadium is a great fun race. There’s a lovely atmosphere and it’s ideal for families to get fit and join in together.

Father and son team, Andrew and Joe McNiven, who completed the fun run last year said, “The atmosphere was fantastic. The feeling of being in a large group of people doing something so positive and worthwhile together was brilliant”.

If you’d like to get fit, support a worthwhile local charity and help keep our city green and wildlife friendly, contact the Wildlife Trust or visit the half marathon website to sign up.
