Sunnybank nature reserve in MaySunnybank nature reserve in May (Sarah Sidgwick)

If you vote for us, we could win Aviva Community funding to work on Sunnybank nature reserve in Sheffield.

Sunnybank is our smallest nature reserve right next to the city centre, behind a petrol station on Abbeydale Road, surrounded by flats, shops and industrial buildings.

Despite its small size, and urban location, Sunnybank has a variety of habitats: woodland provides food and shelter for many songbirds; hay meadows abound with butterflies and the pond surrounded by wetland and aquatic plants is home to several types of dragonfly, pond skaters and common frogs. Foxes, hedgehogs and pipistrelle bats have been seen here too.

This patch of city centre green gets more visitors than any of the other reserves in our care, and is particularly popular with young people. But the entrances to Sunnybank are not particularly attractive or inviting and we suspect that there are many local people who don't realise the reserve is there at all.

We've applied to the Aviva Community Fund because we want to work with local young people to improve the nature reserve entrances by designing and installing some atractive signage.

The Aviva Community funding would be used to construct rails and signage, pay for a Community Wildlife Ranger to work with the young people on design, and for the necessary groundwork to install the new rails.
