Your school can do more great outdoor learning with our help!

Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust has received valuable funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery which will enable us to give pupils and teachers in South Yorkshire an outdoor learning boost.

Teachers often ask for our help to get their pupils learning outside the classroom, so we have designed these opportunities in response to this.

We hope there is something for everyone, and we have tried to give a little extra help to those schools who don't yet have a history of outdoor learning, to help you take the first step outside!

Read on or follow the links above for more information about the opportunities available.

How could your school benefit?

Outdoor learning with the Wildlife Trust

Take the plunge and get your school learning outside!

We want all local schools to offer their pupils great outdoor learning experiences, so we are looking for primary schools who have little or no history of outdoor learning to take part in a free 'taste of outdoor learning' workshop to introduce teachers and pupils alike to the idea of learning outside the classroom.

Love outdoor learning but need help getting out of school?

For schools who struggle to fund out-of-school transport, we have also set up a travel bursary scheme to help children discover their local green spaces.

Take your PE into the wild!

Outdoor learning is a great way for pupils to engage with physical education, so we are offering one primary school and one secondary school the chance to try our six-week Wild PE programme.

Give transition pupils a place to make new friends

Connecting with nature can also be vital for cementing social relationships and building confidence, so we will provide a secondary school and its feeder primaries with an eight-week Transition Forest School course designed specifically to meet the needs of year 6 pupils requiring additional pastoral support.

Access real-world geography field experiences

Are you a geography teacher who needs local, great value hands-on fieldwork experiences for pupils? We are now offering a range of fantastic fieldwork experiences for Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 - and to help schools give pupils the opportunity to get hands-on in the field, we are also providing travel bursaries to schools who book with us.

Learn the skills you need to teach outdoors

We are also committed to providing educators with the skills to do great outdoor learning themselves, so we are providing 20 subsidised places on our accredited Forest School training level 1.

Learn from other teachers, share your experiences

Teachers at the Trust's outdoor learning networkWe also want to see South Yorkshire, home of the Outdoor City, foster a culture of great outdoor learning in schools: so we are launching a new outdoor learning network for schools and teachers in the Sheffield area.

This network, supported by Learn Sheffield, the schools improvement body, will give teachers a chance to learn from schools already doing great outdoor learning themselves, and to take inspiration and top tips from experts in the great outdoors.

With termly meetings and lots of resource-sharing and discussion between meetings, the network is a must for any teacher who wants to do more outdoor learning, or share their experiences with other educators. Click here to find out more and sign up.

About the Wildlife Trusts and the People's Postcode Lottery

This is what it's all about, opening up our natural world to young enthusiasm and inspiring kids to love learning and being outdoors.   Nick Baker, TV presenter

The Wildlife Trusts are very lucky to receive generous support from players of People's Postcode Lottery. People's Postcode Lottery is a charity lottery in Great Britain where players play with their postcodes to win cash prizes whilst raising money for charities. A minimum of 30% from every £2 ticket goes directly to good causes like us.

In 2017 The Wildlife Trusts have been fortunate to receive £2.4million in funding from players of People’s Postcode Lottery to support our work across England, Scotland and Wales.

During the year, thanks to the support of players of People’s Postcode Lottery, The Wildlife Trusts will inspire and connect people to nature through precious species and wild places, provide thousands of children of all ages with opportunities to spend time in nature through a series of Forest School and outdoor learning activities and will stand up for and defend wild places when they face significant threat.
