The Upper Don Living Landscape starts at the headwaters of the Don on the Barnsley Moors and continues downstream to Sheffield City Centre.

At the head of the basin is a species-rich grassland site called Wogden Foot - this is owned by Barnsley Council but managed by the Wildlife Trust in partnership with a local grazier. Other significant sites in this area include the Wildlife Trust's Greno Woods, adjacent to the Forestry Commission's Wharncliffe Woods. Further downstream is Parkwood Springs - a city council site with huge potential as a country park in the heart of the city
