Our wildlife is at risk – take action!
Click here to respond to the Government’s Environmental Principles & Governance after EU exit consultation by 2nd August 2018.
The UK Government is consulting on proposals to incorporate environmental principles into law and establish a new environmental watchdog. But their current proposals are too weak, particularly with regards to the powers of the new regulatory body which will reduce protection for our environment. The Wildlife Trusts, as part of the Greener UK coalition, have used the passage of the EU Withdrawal Bill through Parliament to draw attention to the ‘governance gap’ post-Brexit, and the urgent need to close it. We are calling for:
- A stronger watchdog, with the powers it needs to hold the UK Government to account (including the power to initiate legal proceedings and issue fines where necessary)
- Environmental principles which will apply to all public authorities and agencies
- The Government’s proposed legislation to go further and become an ambitious Environment Act which sets targets for nature’s recovery.
