Harvest Mouse Nest Search

We are inviting the public to help us search for and record harvest mouse nests at Woodhouse Washlands!

We are excited to invite the public to our harvest mouse nest search in the south portion of Woodhouse Washlands. We will be looking through the wetland area and in the edges of the field to find and count the circular nests that harvest mice wove in the spring and summer.

Harvest mice have a ‘near threatened’ status in Britain. They are thought to have become much scarcer in recent years and they require conservation plans to reverse their decline. We previously counted harvest mouse nests at Woodhouse Washlands in 2019 and we will continue to do so every three years as part of our ecological monitoring framework. We want to get a better idea of the population on the reserve to inform how we can manage the reserve for their benefit.

Harvest mouse nests are a reliable field sign of breeding activity and searching for nests is an easy to learn technique. We’d like as many people to join us as possible so we can gather lots of data. No previous knowledge or experience is needed – just come along and we will provide a full briefing beforehand.

This is a free of charge event but booking is essential so that we can confirm numbers. Participants will need to arrive at the start of the slot to hear the briefing and be assigned to a search team. This is NOT a drop in event.

The event is suitable for adults and children aged 7 and over. All children must be supervised by a responsible adult at all times. Participants will need wellies and sturdy gloves (a walking stick may be useful if you have one). We recommend waterproofs and long sleeves as there may be nettles. Please dress appropriately for the weather!
