We need your help to raise £2965 by the 11th July to unlock vital funding to carry out a Whinchat Protection project on our Blacka Moor nature reserve.
The whinchat (Saxicola rubetra) is a nationally declining species that has been included in the Red List of Threatened Species following a 50% decline in Britain and Europe since the 1990s. There is a small population on Blacka Moor which we would like to encourage to thrive.

Whinchats need open wet habitats and dry heath with sections of bracken. Birch saplings are slowly encroaching the heathland and we are proposing a series of activities to control the scrub and bring back the quality of the heathland and wetland by removing saplings and improving the infrastructure for cattle to graze new saplings.
The estimated cost to carry out the project is £29645 and the Landfill Communities Fund funder Biffa Award has approved a grant to pay for this work.
And this is where we need your help. In order to access the funding from Biffa Award we have to pay a 10% Third Party Contribution to the Landfill Operator Biffa Waste Services Ltd – £2965 – and we aren’t allowed to use the Trust’s own funds or that of the contractors who will carry out the work.
We have to be able to prove that the funds have been raised specifically for this purpose.
In order to ensure that the whole £29065 project goes ahead, carrying out work to protect the
wildlife of Blacka Moor and upgrade a valuable resource for the local community, we need to raise
£2965.
Are you able to help? We would be really grateful if you could make a contribution to help us find the
Third Party Contribution; every £1 you can give will secure £11.36 of funding for work to protect
wildlife habitats on Blacka Moor.
You can donate using the form below or send a cheque payable to Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust*. If we end up raising more than the £2,965, we will ensure that additional funds will be used to continue to care for and protect our other nature reserves.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and thank you very much for your support for local wildlife across Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust.
