Newly planted trees in a field

Caring for newly planted trees

South Yorkshire Woodland Partnership have been really busy planting trees over the winter months!

Caring for newly planted trees is really important to help give them the best chance of survival.

Here are 5 top tips from us to help ensure your trees will thrive:

  • Check stakes, ties and guards – loosen or adjust tree ties to prevent the tree trunk becoming constricted as it grows. Check any tree guards are upright and snug into the ground.
  • Weed control – clear grasses and weeds from the base of young trees (but don’t mow!) to reduce competition for water and nutrients. You can also top up with well-rotted mulch if available.
  • Inspect for pests and disease – young trees are vulnerable to attack so check them often for early signs of stress or damage.
  • Light pruning – gently remove dead, damaged or poorly placed shoots to encourage a strong tree structure.
  • Watering – provide deep watering during dry spells to support root establishment. This is more important for larger trees.
