Check out this submission for our Watery Wednesdays summer holiday prize draw! Each week we are posting simple and easy ways you and your little one can have a go at helping wildlife in your garden. Whether it’s a pond or a puddling station, get creative, have some fun and make a water habitat! 3 year old Amber from Sheffield created this watering station for hedgehogs, birds and invertebrates – she freshens it up daily with her little watering can!

Our Advocacy Team held a public drop-in stand at our Wyming Brook Nature Reserve where we spoke to lots of visitors about Living Waters. Visitors learned about the Riverfly Monitoring programme and other citizen science initiatives that can help improve the health of our local waterways, and we carried out a kick sample to demonstrate the diversity of invertebrates in the brook.

Our Advocacy Team invited our local Councillors along to Millhouses Park to introduce Living Waters. Along with the help of our Land and Water team and Dr Mel Lacey of SHU we spoke to countless members of public and ran some wonderfully watery activities. Demonstrating how to make a ten-minute mini pond, water quality/ chemical testing, and carrying out a kick sample in the river for attendees to identify invertebrates. Watch this space for another event in the future!

The 39th Sheffield Don Scouts have been busy working on improving an area for nature at their base – Yorkshire Muslim Academy. With the help of our Youth Officer they made a mini planter out of an upcycled tire choosing pollinator friendly flowers to plant, and were keen to add a mini pond. Complete with rocks and sticks to provide shelter and easy access, also creating further habitat with more rocks and sticks around the edges!
