Rooting for Hedgerows: Over 7km of New Hedgerows Transforming South Yorkshire

This week from 4th-10th May 2026, South Yorkshire Woodland Partnership (SYWP) are excited to celebrate National Hedgerow Week!

Did you know that hedgerows form a key part of South Yorkshire Woodland Partnership’s free tree planting across South Yorkshire each year? Together with landowners and the Woodland Trust, SYWP successfully helped to plant 7.65km of hedgerows last season across South Yorkshire (equating to around 39,000 new trees and shrubs)!

Many of these hedgerows were planted along field boundaries but they were also planted as part of community-led schemes in local parks, community centres and allotment sites.

Hedgerows are the UK’s largest wildlife habitat and provide valuable ecosystem services such as nesting sites for birds, food sources such as berries for small mammals during winter, and wildlife corridors to help connect fields and woodlands together.

SYWP are now working together with new landowners and community groups to prepare for future hedgerow and tree planting in autumn 2026.
