5 minutes to nature for everyone
Being able to access and connect with nature supports people’s health and wellbeing, as well as increasing their interest in helping to protect and care for nature in the longer-term. And this is particularly pertinent for young people.
No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.Sir David Attenborough, Patron of the Wildlife Trusts
No one will protect what they don’t care about; and no one will care about what they have never experienced.
Sadly, in Sheffield and Rotherham, access to good quality nature is not equal for everyone.
Our ambition is that everyone has access to good quality nature within 5 minutes of their home, workplace or school. This means working alongside communities to improve their green spaces and increase their wellbeing through connection to nature.
The Nature Equity Map has been developed to help identify communities across Sheffield and Rotherham with the greatest need for improved access to nature. The map serves multiple purposes:
Our Children and Young People team offer a wide range of unique, fun and educational activities to fit with the curriculum for all ages as well as providing fun nature-based activities for families throughout the school holidays.
“I’ve been to the parks around my house before but I’ve never been up in the mountains like this before…I was so excited to get to come to a nature reserve.” – 13 year old participant enjoying a session at Greno Woods
Wild at Heart is a social group for adults with the aim of exploring our local green spaces to use the natural world to help boost wellbeing, learn new skills and hobbies, and make new friends in the community.

We’ve been working with the NHS and multiple partners to increase the amount of Green Social Prescribing (GSP) available. That’s a non-medical intervention where people get time out in nature doing nature based activities with other people – so there is a social connection as well as the connection with nature. A huge body of evidence shows that connection to nature can have a huge impact on people’s mental and physical health.
We’re keen to increase the number of people who can access GSP, and understand the barriers some people face, so we were delighted to work with the University of Sheffield School of Languages and Culture, to discover how people from myriad backgrounds and diverse cultures value and access nature.
