The Urban Forest refers collectively to all trees within the urban realm, from private gardens and public parks to wild spaces and forgotten corners. Our speaker, Catherine Nuttgens, will explain how they all contribute to our city’s green infrastructure and the wider urban ecosystem, and how we can all play a part in protecting and enhancing this treasure.
Catherine has had a 25 year career that spans across the environmental sector. Her roleshave included UK Urban Tree Lead at the Woodland Trust, Community Forestry Manager at Sheffield City Council and leading a diverse range of woodland, heritage, education and community projects across South and West Yorkshire since 2001. She set up Nuttgens Urban Forestry in February 2024 where she now works across industry, academic and public spheres.
Through her work, she has explored mutually beneficial ways in which urban communities can work with nature, and she brings a range of expertise, including arboriculture, landscape heritage, environmental education and forest schools.
Catherine has been involved in multiple creative and collaborative approaches that help communities reap the benefits of nature and urban greenspace. She believes that there is joy and wonder to be found in nature. By enabling everyone to appreciate and understand this we can create a better future for people and the planet.
