Things to do at Greno Woods

© greno-woods-walk-helena-dolby

Greno Woods is a popular recreational site on the fringe of the Peak District. Covering 169 hectares, it is one of our largest nature reserves and offers excellent opportunities for fun, wildlife watching, exploration and recreation.

Greno Woods is an ancient woodland, rich in wildlife and full of historic interest. The woods are criss-crossed by a network of footpaths and bridleways, and offer many opportunities for walks both long and short. Walk along the Trans-Pennine Trail in spring and revel in woodland wildflowers including bluebells, honeysuckle and common cow-wheat. Take a similar walk in summer and enjoy the ripe blackberries and bilberries, whilst autumn reveals a profusion of fungi. Birdwatchers will be kept busy through all seasons!

Those of you looking to do a bit of exploring can try the routes on our Orienteering in Greno Woods page.

If you prefer to enjoy the outdoors at a faster pace, cyclists can also follow the bridleways, or pass through the reserve on the Trans Pennine Trail which runs through the woods here, whilst adrenaline seekers are invited to try our 3 downhill mountain bike trails, which include the famous Steel City run. The woods also offer excellent horse-riding opportunities including a 3km bridleway loop (which links with bridleways in adjacent Wheata and Wharncliffe Woods).

Greno Woods for families

The woods have plenty to offer for families. Wander the tracks, investigate the Enchanted Forest Trail, try out our den building area, search for the Greno geocache or try the Greno Woods Explorer challenge.

Greno Woods are open to the public 365 days a year. Download a map of Greno Woods
