The perfect solution to using up those sprouting potatoes we seem to end up with in our veg racks. Watch and learn how a plant grows over time with this fun and creative activity.
What you’ll need:
– A shoe box (or other cardboard box you can open and close easily) – Other bits of card – Cello-tape/glue or both (Duct Tape works really well if you have some) – A sprouting spud
Use the additional card to create a simple (or complex if you think your spud is up for a challenge) maze by securing ‘walls’ inside. Ensure the walls reach from the bottom to the top of the box when it is closed to ensure the shoots of the potato can’t cheat.
Make an opening at the opposite end of the maze to where your potato is placed, and put the box in a bright place such a window sill. Your potato will gradually send its sprouts through the maze toward the light.
Being a root veg (and, quite frankly, amazing) your potato has, stored inside it, everything it needs to do this. You don’t need any soil or water for your spud to find its way through your maze.
You can check your maze as often as you like, but remember it won’t make it grow any faster.
